Oh wow this is a good thread. Your son?! Amazing. Okay I agree with Wild Horses and I'd add a couple more (well I'd add many more but for now I'll keep it short):
Hurt by Johnny Cash
My Immortal by Evanescence
For the most part our favorite bars are honky tonks, so we get a lot of country. Always good for drowning sorrows....
I had The Dance by Garth Brooks also - but nothing but cruddy covers on YouTube. Still, it's a brilliant song and probably one of the best for sorrows drowning/beer consuming purposes.

Bar songs, I love them. Even the sad ones. This one always makes me stop and think and get just a little sad:
Don Mclean American Pie 1972 - YouTube
And this one, it's always on at our bar or someone's playing a cover. It makes me sad for personal reasons, more nostalgic than anything:
America Sister Golden Hair - YouTube
But my all time is this one. Time for shots when this comes on
Fleetwood Mac - Landslide (Video) - YouTube
Excellent Aargh, just added mine and I also went ahead and put Hurt up there because man. Just man, you know?
Some great choices you listed, Angie by the Stones is awesome too.
My Immortal's a good one Samantha (Aargh I'm adding it - Sam hope that is okay).
This one hurts.
Since this one was on the list

I loved this song so much when I was younger. Such a great voice Sinead has.
Purple Rain is an epic song really I never loved Prince, his music was ok but this is a wonderful song. And the movie...have not seen that in a while but it was pretty good as well.
IF, and that's a big 'if', you can erase the memory of Will Ferrell singing this in Old School, you're left with a really haunting sad lil' diddy.
Really sad song.
I love this song.
